As a commerce student, with no tech or cs background (but an interest in it) does it make sense to choose computer science as one of my 2nd/3rd choice majors? Or do I have to have some qualifications?

It depends on the school and whether they admit directly to the major or not. Many universities will allow for students to take the prerequisite classes for CS at their school and determine there if CS is the right major. If you're applying to a school that will allow you to enter CS from being in an undeclared major, you should be fine and will have a chance of CS. However, you should have a backup major as you may not get into CS.
